Forget those fictional re-enactments of what life was like in the 1920’s, here’s is actual footage of the period.

Is it just me or does it seem so…primitive? The language, the people (where’s all the over-weight ones?), even the cars make it seem like a different world.

Perhaps this video is so strange to me because I’m an American. But having visited Britian, this archive color footage is still surprising. A lot of the historic buildings have been well preserved today- not something too common here in the states.

It should be noted that the original footage of this was taken by the pioneer filmmaker Claude Friese-Greene who “colorized” black and white film footage by inserting red and green stained frames in between the non-color ones to create an illusion of true color.

Despite its status as global phenomenon, I’ve never gotten into Lost. Looking at this video, I wonder why. After all, it’s got some gorgeous beaches, some even more good looking people. In fact, it’s an awful lot like Baywatch!

But the similarities don’t stop there. We’ve got plenty of people running along the beach and swimming in the ocean. And Malcolm David Kelley is like a modern day Hobie Buchanan!

This clever mash-up takes the angst out of Lost and plays up the scenery, the romance, and all those abs. That show about the plane crash may not have inspired me, but I’d watch this!

Every year the Oscars are on I turn on the TV only to be consistently let down. It’s not that I don’t like movies, it’s just that all the acceptance speeches are pretty much the same.

Cuba Gooding Jr. holds the record for the most outrageous speech of all time, and for a good reason. The whole room lit up when he won for Jerry McGuire and he carried that energy until he got off stage. It’s a rare occurrence, but certainly one that I’d love to see more.

I love this compilation because it shows what the 3-hour award show is usually about; letting actors and actresses give their thanks while comedians interject in-between to keep it interesting.

I used to be a huge Michael Jordan fan when I was a kid. That is, until I realized how big-headed he was. Here’s one of my favorite commercials of him actually admitting his faults.

It’s pretty inspirational, even if you don’t really believe it. At the very least Nike paid him enough money to come off as modest for 30 seconds.

“Practice makes perfect” is a saying we’ve all heard; this commercial merely expands on the concept. It’s been years since this commercial aired, but Michael Jordan is still regarded as the best basketball player in history.

If anything this ad should make you realize that “the greats” aren’t even perfect 100% of the time. That just wouldn’t be human.

Here’s a very strange coincidence that appears in the 90’s TV show Felicity. Actress Amy Smart is considering buying a computer and can’t decide what to get; a PC, an iMac, or an iPad?

And this is in 1999.

The answer to this “futuristic prediction” is actually easier than you’d think. Clearly the writers of the show were computer savvy and switched the words “pad” and “book” in ThinkPads and iBooks when they did the script. Since Ruby (Amy Smart’s character) is bad with computers, she says them the wrong way.

Hell, even if the iPad did exist in 1999, I’m willing to bet Ruby would never buy one. Those things are ridiculous for typing on.

Rowan Atkinson stars as Edmund Blackadder in this funny scene about the superstitions of actors in regards to people uttering the word Macbeth.

There is nothing I like more than a British comedy, and Blackadder certainly lives up to the standard. Blackadder especially has the subtle ways of getting laughs like ignoring the door and tossing the hats out onto the floor.

Simple but funny.

Though people will probably disagree with me, I much prefer to see Rowan Atkinson playing any incarnation of Edmund Blackadder than his other roles like Mr. Bean.

I certainly wouldn’t want to be on his bad side as Blackadder, though…

Consoles like “the household monitor screen” and an “electronic correspondence machine” don’t exist today, but this vintage clip from 1969 is pretty close to predicting the internet.

Also included is an unintentional bit of sexism; which I find very funny.

This clip is an excerpt from an actual documentary in 1969 about the future of middle class Americans. Surprisingly, it predicts things like online shopping and e-mail.

Another funny thing about this video is the subliminal sexism when it concerns the husband paying the bills for the wife. His face at the 0:46 mark is priceless.

It’s easy to forget that it was only fifty years or so ago that humanity lived under the cloud of nuclear annihilation happening at any given moment. Sure, it could still happen now, but the old superpowers have at least cooled off.

This video shows a movie trailer for Panic In Year Zero, which tells an imagined story of what chaos and villainy could reign after a nuclear war began.

Panic In Year Zero has become something of a cult classic. It’s one for connoisseurs of both disaster movies and the atomic age.

The Japanese probably described the plot best by renaming the film Atomic Bomb and Sexual Instinct when it was released there.

If you can catch the film on TV then you should tune in. It’s not the best film in the world, naturally, but it’s intriguing glimpse into the mindset of a generation.

The tributes continue to pour in for late Hollywood actress Brittany Murphy. While many remember her fondly for roles in Clueless and Sin City, I think this classic moment with David Letterman takes the cake.

It’s always awkward when an interviewer asks you about the way your ex is moving on. But Brittany took it in her stride, and delivers a classic comeback.

No matter how many times she protested that she was kidding, we all know you just can’t take a small penis joke back. Considering how often Ashton Kutcher makes jokes at the expense of others, it’s kind of nice to see him being burned!

If you’re like me, you’re missing Dave Chappelle’s witty humor. Perhaps it’s just a coincidence, but it seems like most mainstream comedians these days shy away from making the audience question their own beliefs and would rather perpetuate the popular ones.

Here’s a classic stand-up performance from back in 1994 in which Dave did just that.

Even though this clip is nearly 15 years old, it’s surprisingly relevant today. Rodney King may be old news, but the controversy surrounding N-word and homosexuality hasn’t changed for the most part.

Chappelle, as he states in this clip, moved to New York in the mid 90’s to pursue his stand-up career. Even at the young age of 21, it’s easy to see his comedic genius.

Darkness descends on that famous street, as Sesame Street mourns Broadway lady, TV actress and Sesame Street star Alaina Reed Hall (Olivia).

Just because we’re nearing Christmas doesn’t mean the bad news around the world is going to stop for an instant.

With a beautiful voice as well as vibrant personality, Alaina is likely best known for her time as Olivia on Sesame Street. However, she also spent time on stage as well as on her own cooking show. (YouTube search her name.)

After a two year battle with breast cancer, Alaina passed away at age 63 at St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica.

I’m so glad this spin-off never made it past 1 season. I’m sure John Hughes (R.I.P.) couldn’t have predicted how bad this show was going to be. Jennifer Aniston must have been broke and/or out of her mind to even be involved with this.

It literally destroys everything enjoyable about the movie- the kid playing Ferris actually chainsaws a cardboard cutout of Matthew Broderick!

Before Jason Bateman was starring in movies like Extract, he was a TV actor- and not a very good one at that. Most 90’s shows seem a bit dated, but this one is just sad and ridiculous. Don’t even get me started on how horribly cheesy the song is.

Clearly the only good thing about this show is it’s concept.

On SNL’s A Very Gilly Christmas special that aired tonight, Gilly presented a best-of reel of the funniest Christmas related sketches. But just because the special includes the word ‘Christmas’ that doesn’t mean others can’t enjoy it.

Personally, I happen to think this sketch is the funnier of the two just because I know how boring NPR hosts can be. I don’t know what National Public Radio announcers really look like, but I’m sure they’d look no different.

Kennedy is rolling in his grave right now.

I can’t tell you the exact date of this speech, but it’s obviously been more than 40 years and we Americans are still, as JFK puts it, “behind” when it comes to providing medical coverage for the average citizen.

I’m not saying I’m 100% behind Obama’s current plan, but at least it’s a step towards some progression. If everyone else has government regulated health care coverage, why don’t we?

Remember that 90’s sitcom Family Matters? You know, the funny show with the geek who couldn’t get a girl to save his life and was a constant klutz? If not, you’re still in for a real treat.

Urkel was always funny to me as a kid, but I always shy away from the show when I see re-runs on TV. Most of my childhood TV favorites are no longer funny to me and I automatically assumed Family Matters would be the same. Boy, was I wrong!

I never realized how talented he really is. The Bruce Lee bit at the end (#2) is just jaw-dropping! People just don’t hurt themselves in sitcoms anymore like they used to.

Today marks the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street. The show aired it’s first season back in 1969 and became an international phenomenon ever since.

But don’t tell Big Bird That. In this interview with Jimmy Kimmel he still thinks he’s only 6 years old.

It only seems appropriate for Jimmy Kimmel, who has dressed up as Big Bird in the past, to interview Sesame Street’s biggest star in person. Of course it’s impossible to tell who really is in the suit in this clip, but the performer is most likely Caroll Spinney.

Spinney, who is currently 75 years old now is still surprisingly as sharp as ever. Here’s to many more years of Sesame Street!

The Cosby Show may have been a family-oriented show, but some of these outtakes are pretty controversial. No, they’re not as shocking as the profanity-laced Thundercats bloopers, yet the jokes that are brought up have some racial and sexist undertones.

You know, like the jokes real American families say to each other.

It’s a little known fact that the majority of the audience for The Cosby Show at it’s peak of popularity was the white middle-class. So while it may seem surprising to find jokes like the one at the 4:34 mark made, I’m sure there were tons more that will never see the light of day.

This footage came as a extra on the Cosby Show Season 2 DVDs released back in 2005. It took 20 years, but now we finally get a glimpse into the “real” Cosby family.

We’ve accomplished a lot in the past 100 years of film. Not only have we gone from simple 16 fps black and white movies to colorful high def, but the quality of the special effects have also changed dramatically.

When I was a kid I remember being terrified out of my mind when watching Jurassic Park. I had no idea that what I was seeing was a result of decades of film-making, all I knew was that the dinosaurs looked real.

This tribute video highlights some of the most ground-breaking movie scenes, however, I couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed by the end. 2001: A Space Odyssey, Titanic, The Matrix and 300 are all movies that define Hollywood today yet they weren’t included.

Say hello to the man who made one of the subtlest funny moments in television history by turning his name into a drawing of a penis on one of the most academic shows ever.

Strangely enough, this is actually one of those moments in television I remember from my childhood. I didn’t watch the actual show, but I remember his ‘penis name’ being commented on quite a bit.

I love how they worked in the ‘write your name as a penis’ lesson there at the end.

I don’t even need to try to make a penis out of my name. It would be entirely too easy to draw/write something really inappropriate.

Today is a sad day for movie fans around the world. Director John Hughes died today of a heart attack early this morning. He was only 59.

Here’s a 9 minute tribute video that contains clips of his most popular films including The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.

John was indeed the king of the 80’s teen movie genre. After working for National Lampoon magazine in the 70’s he went on to direct some of the most iconic teen films of the 80’s. Molly Ringwald, Emilo Estevez, and John Candy owe a good bit of their success to Hughes.

Even though he stopped directing movies in 1991, his legacy lives on through today’s teen movies. It’s safe to say that modern teen films like Mean Girls and Superbad would have never been possible if it weren’t for John Hughes’ influence.
