While it can be a giggle-worthy topic when you first hear about it – and Cenk doesn’t always help – this does have some very serious implications for Japan.

No one ever wants to see a roof falling in on them while they’re inside a building. Least of all the metal roof of an ice rink.

These kids are happily training in their ice hockey rink when someone notices the roof is starting to peel away at the seams. I don’t think that’s meant to happen somehow.

Everyone gets moved to the edges of the rink, and eventually out of the building altogether. But as the way these days, someone captures it on their mobile phone for posterity.

It looks as though heavy snowfall caused the collapse, as I’m guessing that’s the white stuff that comes falling through the cracks in the building as it caves in. Scary stuff.

Watching the sun rise or the sun set is a truly awe-inspiring experience. It’s visually stunning, and it also helps to ground you, and make you realize you’re just another animal on a planet that is rotating in space.

But what if you were able to artificially cause the sun to rise?

That is exactly what Tropicana did in London recently as part of a new viral advertising campaign. Tropicana is an American brand of fruit juice, and the sun was clearly meant to represent the color of its orange juice product.

This looks awesome, as in it really could be mistaken for the sun, at least after a cursory glance. And then you’d get closer and realize it’s just something hanging in Trafalgar Square.

Tracy Morgan clearly isn’t a well man. The 30 Rock actor recently collapsed after an awards ceremony and was rushed to hospital.

Just before his collapse Morgan had received an award from the Creative Coalition at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. Park City has an elevation of 7,000 feet.

Morgan was diagnosed with diabetes in 1996, but refused to change his lifestyle in order to ease the condition. Then in 2010, Morgan received a kidney transplant.

The hospital has unequivocally stated that no drugs or alcohol was found in Morgan’s system. Instead his collapse is being blamed on a combination of exhaustion and altitude sickness.

Every year I set a bunch of New Year’s Resolutions, but only seem to accomplish a few. Here’s a video which examines that concept with a ton of hilarious outcomes.

This year, lets be sure to set realistic goals.

Now I’m sure we’ve all been those people with goals like “read more,” “learn how to cook,” and “learn a new language.” However, the percent of us that actually learned Chinese compared to the percent that attempted to is almost embarrassing.

My favorite part this video is outtakes during the credits- these YouTube actors have some damn good improv skills.

I think she hits on the real issue fairly early in the video: If you are ‘fine’ then you don’t have to do anything about it.

That’s the biggest part – and problem – of being ‘fine’ and how we screw ourselves over.

Time to stop being ‘fine’ and start living.

Christmas is over. Sadly. Still, there’s always New Year to look forward to, and that means a potentially awesome New Year’s Eve party. If you get it right.

This girl has her own ideas on how to throw an awesome New Year party. Some of which make sense, some of which don’t. Possibly because she’s a bit woozy.

My tip would be not to go out under any circumstances. It’s too expensive, there are too many people, and it almost always ends badly. Or, at the very least, disappointingly.

Throw a party at home by all means. But you don’t need to do anything special. People just want to be able to relax, drink copious amounts of alcohol, eat some nibbles, and listen to a little music. And then see the ball drop at midnight. Sorted.

The older I get the more crotchety I become. I generally don’t like people. And it doesn’t help when I see shit like this happening. People show themselves up to be idiots sometimes.

This video shows a gaggle of shoppers in a Walmart in Arkansas going crazy to get their hands on a waffle maker for $2. This happened on Black Friday, naturally.

While $2 is a great price, this is only a waffle maker. And one which only makes two waffles at a time, at that. Is it really worth turning into animals over?

That is what we’re seeing here: humanity going back to its roots. Thousands of years of civilization goes out of the window, only to be replaced by greed and douchebaggery. And all for a crappy waffle maker. How sad.

Lulu is a single mom who’d gone back to school and didn’t have the time or interest in working full-time to pay for rent. So when she had to move out of her more conventional home, she decided to move herself and her daughter into a shipping container.

With little building experience – none when it came to building a house – Lulu spent just one month cutting windows and a door and installing insulation and a basic kitchen (complete with propane-powered campstove and on-demand water heater).

Using only recycled building materials- including used floorboards, windows, cabinets, doors, bathtub, toilet and sinks – she built the entire thing for about $4,000 (trailer included).

British customer service begins and ends with a fake smile and a lackluster, “Thank you.” American customer service begins and ends with a more genuine smile and an enthusiastic, “Have a nice day.”

But this is Indian customer service. And it’s superior in every way.

This video highlights five examples of customer service. These are Indian men who value their jobs and value their customers. Not only will they serve you they will entertain you while they’re at it.

Some of these practices are more about efficiency and routine than anything else, but they’re very impressive feats of timing and accuracy. I’m not sure this is enough to make me want to visit India, but it sure does help.

This guy was demonstrating how to climb a ladder, and how being tied on can save you if you happen to fall off. Unfortunately nothing will save you if the ladder decides to fall over sideways.

A lot of people hate Health and Safety, and the do-gooding nerds who tend to bang on about it all the time. So to see someone whose job it is to demonstrate how not to fall off a ladder fall off a ladder has made given joy to countless millions.

I’m sure no one wishes this guy ill or hopes he was injured in the fall, but to see him hoisted by his own petard is pretty damn funny.

The stupid thing is that Health and Safety directives are there for two reasons: to stop people injuring themselves and others, and to prevent a company from being sued by these no-win, no-fee merchants. Neither of which are bad things, surely.

What starts out as a boring video showing people sitting on a train set for London turns into something much more exciting. Especially for one couple.

This wouldn’t be my choice of how to propose or be proposed to. Traveling to work on a commuter train is hardly a romantic setting, singers or no singers.

And if I’d been one of the passengers I would have probably switched carriages rather than listen to this racket. It’s also selfish behavior which could be considered anti-social. Or am I just a miserablist?

At least it’s memorable, and thanks to the wonders of handheld cameras and the Internet it will remain as a reminder of the event on YouTube for a long time. It may even outlast the marriage. Statistics would suggest so.

What? Another social network to add to Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Diaspora, MySpace, and the smörgåsbord of also-rans? Fantastic. But wait, because this one, named Nextdoor, offers something a little bit different.

Nextdoor is a social network for neighborhoods, offering communities their own private space to hang out, communicate, and discuss local topics of interest without fear of trolls getting involved in the conversation.

As the video suggests, neighbors are now much less likely to know each other in this day and age than in previous generations. And that is partly because of the Internet giving us another outlet to make friends.

Nextdoor is an attempt to use the Internet for good, bringing back the sense of community to local neighborhoods. It’s a cracking idea but I’m not convinced it’ll work. It really depends how many of us actually want to get to know the people living next door to us.

This video shows the new Nest Learning Thermostat in operation. This device was designed and engineered by the same guy who created the iPod at Apple, so expectations are high. Even for a humble thermostat.

The main advantage of the Nest Learning Thermostat is, as the name suggests, its ability to learn how you like your home heated at various times of the day and night.

Essentially you program the Nest Learning Thermostat for a couple of weeks, turning it down at night and up in the morning, and it’ll eventually start programming itself to fit in with your routine.

Thankfully this learned behavior can always be overwritten, so when you go on holiday you can turn it right down. The Nest Learning Thermostat is expected to save most households money on their heating bill, thereby paying for itself within a couple of years.

This new report tells how one dad got so drunk he had to be driven home by his nine-year-old daughter. A misdemeanor for which he received 15 years in jail. For child abuse, bizarrely.

OK, so this guy did wrong. He shouldn’t have got so drunk as to need his daughter to drive him home. He shouldn’t have asked her to do so. He shouldn’t have put her in that position.

However, at least he didn’t drink and drive, which would have more likely resulted in someone being killed or injured. Especially as the daughter seemed to be an accomplished driver.

And 15 years in prison for this offense? That seems very excessive when people who have killed or raped can get away with spending less time inside. Idiocy? Sure. Justice? I’m not convinced.

As you may have heard already Zachary Quinto has come out as gay, officially announcing what many have suspected for some time. And this fan cannot contain her excitement at the news.

Quinto, Spoke in the new Star Trek movies and Sylar from Heroes, came out as gay in an interview with New York Magazine. I really hope it doesn’t impact on his Hollywood career.

I don’t quite get why this girl is so excited. Sure, it’s another big name coming out of the closet, and the more that do so the more likely universal acceptance is going to be. But still.

It actually annoys me that a celebrity coming out as gay is big news. It really shouldn’t matter a jot and we should all just shrug our shoulders and move on. But instead we make a big deal of it.

Okay, that’s not really fair. I know some people I consider to be rich who are the most generous, supportive people I know.

Even so, I thought we already knew this implicitly if not by some other way.

I think his hypothesis of why the rich are less empathic is an interesting one to be sure, which is sad because the rich are the ones able to give the most help.
