We’ve all heard the expression, “You took that too far!” when it comes to certain jokes. TooFar.TV is a site created for people who aren’t so easily offended and features uncensored stand-up acts by rising comedians.

If you’re looking for clean comedy, look elsewhere.

TooFar.TV prides itself on being a one-stop destination for the not-so-easily offended. It’s content, however, doesn’t live quite up to expectations when it comes to original comedy sketches and music.

The stand-up, on the other hand, is a comedy gold mine consisting of live footage from various Yuk Yuk comedy clubs. Viewers are presented with a blend of comics from Canada, London, and even the United States.

Here’s one of the most controversial and, perhaps, one the most enjoyable performances from TooFar.TV’s Stand-Up section. No doubt, Danny is one of those comics that deserves to be on TV, but is having a hard time due to his subject material.

If you’re fed up with all the scare tactics, over-inflated egos, and celebrity “news” that seems to be plaguing most mainstream news stations these days, look no further than FORA.tv for a better alternative.

One could almost compare the web TV station to C-SPAN- but with topics you actually care about.

The Angry Video Game Nerd is a very famous YouTube nerd who has only recently come to my attention. I’m not so sure if it’s the fact that he reviews classic (or outdated as some would say) video games, or the actual way in which he reviews these games.

If you’re a fan of web series like You Suck At Photoshop, then you’ll love the humor of Angry Video Game Nerd.

James D. Rolfe has been reviewing games in his own unique way since 2004 under the name “Angry Nintendo Nerd.” But after a trademark issue, he changed his name to “Angry Video Game Nerd” and started reviewing games on other classic platforms including the Atari 2600, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, and occasionally N64 and PS1.

An Online Celebrity

Apparently the name change and diversification has paid off. AVGN (ask he’s known by his fans) is the currently the 8th most subscribed director on YouTube. Most of his reviews gain over 500,000 views within a matter of weeks and he recently has had a deal with GameTrailers.com that makes his new episodes exclusive to their site.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Review

This is perhaps the most popular review by AVGN that propelled him to become an internet celebrity. His humor and video editing skills are the reason it has gained $3.5 million views.

If you own a mobile phone in the US, chances are you’ve heard of ComedyTime. Currently, the original content provider has over 3.5 million subscribers on Sprint, VCAST, Cingular, MobiTV, Altel, Amp’d and U.S. wireless networks.

But what you probably didn’t know is that ComedyTime videos can also be seen online for free.

A big advantage that ComedyTime has over other content providers is that it is a partner with Bob Fisher, the owner of the legendary Ice House comedy club. In fact, many clips are taken from performances there where acts like George Lopez and Chris Tucker are regular performers.

Since the company started in 2004, it has grown to encompass 25 original sketch series and counting. Some are sponsored by companies like Def Jam. Here’s a list of the most popular ones:

Overhyped?

On paper, ComedyTime seems like a winner. It has a large fan base, tons of original content, and access to quality stand-up. However, I found most of the series to be knock offs (Roscoe the Party Dog resembles Wilfred) and, to my disappointment, a performance from George Lopez has yet to grace the site.

Even though the site may not contain big name acts, decent stand-up isn’t hard to find. Take this clip of Natasha Leggero for example. She’s no Sarah Silverman, but she does open for her.

Remember the good ol’ days of MTV?

Neither do I, which is why NotMTV was created. Their catchphrase “By the fans, for the fans” remains true to those who like independent music.

NotMTV, which stands for Not Mainstream Typical Videos (most likely because they want to prevent a lawsuit), promises and delivers original content that you won’t find anywhere else on the net.

NotMTV has so much ’street cred’ that it’s sometimes even invited by bands to film. For example, new alt-rock band “The Street Drum Corps” (which will be touring with Linkin Park this summer) invited NotMTV to shoot behind the scenes footage of their new live project called “Drum Roll.”

Problems

Though there is little to complain about on NotMTV, the main matter that needs to be resolved is the download database. For example, when trying to download most videos I get “File not available for download.” Disappointing, since this is one of the main features.

Another issue is the fact that unlike YouTube you can’t view all of a director’s videos by simply clicking their name. Each video has to be searched for through. This can become a hassle, especially when a user submits a web series. Hopefully these problems will be fixed when they “update their systems.”

NotMTV Special: Listen to Hear

Above is the NotMTV original production “Listen to Hear” which focuses on the question “How loud is too loud?” when playing music on your headphones. You may be surprised at how much damage you may be doing to your ears.

Aside from mini-documentaries and interviews (which are sometimes featured on Revision3 ), there are loads of royalty-free live music downloads in virtually any format (mp4,mov, wmv, mp3). Even indie bands can submit their music for free.

C3, which stands for College Creativity, Collaborative, is an independent college network that aims to bring together those in the film, music, and photography industries.

Aside from having it’s own radio network, it also has 5 web series which are updated Monday through Friday.

One specific web series that all college goers can relate to is My Freshman Year which chronicles one student’s freshman year at NYU. The episodes capture everything from the summer before to the finals at the end.

STACKtv is a side project by STACK magazine which was founded by two former collegiate football athletes Nick Palazzo and Chad Zimmerman. It currently maintains a large 3.5 million subscription base catering to mostly high school students.

You may have heard of the show Acceptable TV with Jack Black, but did you know the creators Dan Harmon and Rob Schrab were also behind a monthly short film festival called Channel 101?

Unlike most festivals or even TV, Channel 101 lets the viewers decide which series should be continued for another month. Even though the free festival is based in LA, you can still catch all the series online.

Channel 101’s live screenings aren’t similar indie film festivals like Sundance; the creators like to refer to it as an “untelevised TV network.” Each month, approximately 10 shows are submitted for screening and whichever make the cut are “prime time shows.”

Channel 101 is all about embracing aspiring film makers. Shorts are limited to 5 minutes in length and filmmakers can submit any number of pilots. Even the failed pilots are available for free viewing and download on the site.

‘Stop It’ Episode 4

This is an episode from one of the current “prime time” shows on Channel 101 called ‘Stop It.’ The series is a mockumentary reality show about people battling absurd addictions. In this episode Bill is addicted to “America’s Next Top Model.”

Remember those “choose your own adventure” books that were big in the 90’s? As of late, the idea was revived by brothers Kevin Antoine and Erik Luchauer with their new site ‘Rootclip.’

Only this time the idea isn’t for stories on print, but on video.

Rootclip is just one of those viral ideas that you wish you came up with. The concept has even been copied by Microsoft with their new Ultimate Video Relay contest. As brilliant as the idea sounds on paper, the actual act of getting others to contribute has proven to be trying.

Indie filmmakers are asked to continue the story in a short 60 second clip, but the problem is that scenes, actors, and props change every time a new producer gets involved. Winners get $500 for their winning chapter and grand-prize winners will be sent to the Traverse City Film Festival.

Apparently, this type of reward isn’t enough to get excited over. For chapter 3 there has only been one submission and there are only 4 days left to submit videos. For chapter 2 there were only 3 submissions, one of them being a Rickroll.

Chapter 1

This is the first chapter where the story and characters are introduced. Sadly, it only currently has a total of 86 views on YouTube. After each chapter, filmmakers are allowed 10 days to continue the story. When all is said and done, the total story will be 12 minutes in length.

Atomic Wedgie is a comedy video channel that was started in 2006, but has only recently come to my attention. The site, which contains over 27 different web series, was started by FremantleMedia.

That’s right, the same people that produce American Idol.

Atomic Wedgie also boasts an impressive creative team; while some series are made by independent film makers, most are professionals from projects like Mad TV, Family Guy, Scrubs and even The Office. They also claim to be one of the top viewed comedy video channels on MySpaceTV.

Not So Atomic?

So why hasn’t Atomic Wedgie been making waves in the viral video world? Their series are certainly accessible through mobile phone companies like Helio and Sprint. Perhaps it’s because their “gutbusting parodies” and “killer jokes” aren’t so hilarious after all.

Baywatch Parody

Don’t take my word for it, try watching the above clip and laughing. Chances are, if you find this Baywatch parody funny, then you might find the other Atomic web series funny. I, on the other hand, will stick to FunnyOrDie.

Last year, PodShow was the third fastest growing site on the net. Currently, the website counts almost 100 million video views per month. In order to expand, the company is looking to abandon it’s concentration on user-generated content and focus more with it’s new pool of producers and developers.

You kiddies with webcams better move out the way, the big boys are coming through.

Will Ferrel must be having the time of his life. Aside from making over 20 million dollars a movie, his site FunnyOrDie just celebrated it’s one-year anniversary and has reached over 30,000 original comedy videos.

The latest OrDie offshoot isn’t too far from Ferrel’s usual material. Only this time, it features three other comedians: Larry the Cable Guy, Bill Engvall and Jeff Foxworthy.

Now, he’s set to increase the crossover between the two industries with a new channel called TommyTV launching in collaboration with the Sony BMG record label.

Live Performances

The new site will feature live performances from new and established artists alike, as well as unknown musicians through the Hilfiger auditions.

At the launch in London on Wednesday, Hilfiger said:

“This is a platform for new young musicians to show their talents on a global stage and have a connection with our partner Sony BMG.”

Increasing Brand Awareness

For Sony BMG, TommyTV marks its first encounter with online music marketing. While the label won’t be selling music through the site, it hopes to increase brand awareness, and promote artists.

This should be an interesting experiment to watch, as if it’s a success, it could lead to a whole host of other collaborations and new Web TV channels.

DemocraticMedia is a YouTube channel that is entirely dedicated to political documentaries. In all, the channel has over 360 videos that include countless full length documentaries from Michael Moore’s ‘Sicko’ to CNBC’s ‘The Age of Walmart.’

You don’t have to be a democrat to enjoy these movies.

It looks like Sony Pictures Entertainment is finally taking online video seriously. They’ve revamped their old Grouper site under a new name and are constantly on the lookout for the “hottest emerging talent on the web.”

By creating CRACKLE, Sony hopes to stray away from the copyright infringing past that Grouper was once associated with by placing a new agenda on original web series.

Irvine millionaire David Samuels has been relatively dormant since he sold his $250 million State of the Art software company in 1991. However, that all changed last week when he launched KoldCast.tv.

As he stated in a recent interview, “The monopoly that the major networks have held for so long is now subject to penetration by companies like our own.”

Vice magazine, known for their reputation to address taboo subjects, has a video web site where viewers can find guerrilla-style news reports. It’s called VBS.tv and it recently got financed by the one and only Viacom.

Jeff Yapp, the executive VP for program enterprises for the MTV Networks said, “They gave me a pitch of ‘60 Minutes’-meets-’Jackass.’”

Damon Wayans, one very big half of the Wayans Brothers, has started promoting his new online comedy network called WayOutTV. While the actual website isn’t up yet (he is still in talks about funding), you can catch many promo shorts on his YouTube channel.

He’d love for you to check out his “loser generated content floatin’ around the internets.”

Viewers of Comcast’s own AZN Television network will be sad to hear that the channel will be shutting down this April due to lack of viewers.

But don’t worry, the channel has just launched its new media player which allows you free on demand content. It looks like AZN TV will find it’s new home on the web.
