In fact the vast, vast majority of Americans thought it was hilarious. But the right-wingers were trying to use it to get around the constitutional right to freedom of speech and expression so that the FCC could have more control of the media during the Bush administration. This gives them more ability to control people's access to information and therefore public contestation. To be honest, you guys in the UK already have this problem. You have a much higher level of media control than we do as the British government can actually determine what content can be shown in the country. Ours can only state what age you have to be to watch it and what stations and time it must be on (can't have hardcore on public access at noon, but it can be on cable at 10pm). The exception would be something like child pron or snuff films of course. You can see why it would be tempting for the Bush administration to try to find opportunities to gain more control over media by stating that it is "dangerous" to give media too much free will. It's kind of like how Brits look for every silly opportunity to look down on Americans. Someone (and oh dear god it was a bunch of "commoners") has beaten you. Get over it.
