This is ten minutes of The Late Show with David Letterman well worth watching. It features an interview with Joaquin Phoenix where the actor is meant to be on talking about his new film, Two Lovers. It doesn’t quite go as expected.
Phoenix comes on with a big bushy beard and sunglasses and proceeds to sit there looking sheepish and giving monosyllabic replies. And I thought Meg Ryan was an awkward guest!
The thing is there’s some debate as to whether this was serious or whether Phoenix was putting on an act. Some people suggest he’s drugged up while some suggest this is his new thing in response to the bloggers who think he’s lost it.
Whatever the truth, Letterman handles the whole thing superbly, carrying on the interview normally for a while before starting to make gentle digs. Was Phoenix being serious? Watch the video and decide for yourself.
