With Liam Neeson, Alexander Skarsgård, and Rihanna in leading roles Battleship should be pretty decent. Unfortunately the first trailer suggests it is anything but. I guess that’s what happens when you base a movie on the name of a board game.
This is how Hollywood operates in 2011: find a recognizable brand that sells worldwide, acquire the rights to it, and then make a movie based on the name (but not necessarily the game itself).
Battleship is a classic board game whereby you position your ships and the other player tries to find them on the board. It’s so simple to the point there is no actual storyline to speak of.
This means that the movie version basically takes the name and does whatever the hell it wants with it. Which as this trailer shows is bring what looks like alien technology into the mix. I despair, I really do. This looks terrible.
