The 19th Wife Book Review Video | Lifetime TV Movie Based On David Ebershoff Novel

The 19th Wife is a book by David Ebershoff that was first released in 2008 that looks at polygamous marriage in the Mormon Church. And this week saw Lifetime offer up its TV movie adaptation.

This video is a review of the book, but it’s the TV movie which has been making headline over the past few days. Mainly because one quintessential element of the plot has been changed to appease U.S. TV viewers.

In the literary version the modern-day tale which is intertwined with the past-days tale tells the story of a gay man called Jordan who is ex-communicated from the Church. In the film version Jordan isn’t gay and suddenly doesn’t have a boyfriend.

Is America still that far up its own arse (excuse the pun) that it cannot bear to hear stories of people who just happen to be gay?

I fear, as usual, this is more to do with advertisers and keeping them sweet. Yeah, let’s forget about decades of fighting for the rights of everyone to be equal. Because homosexuality just doesn’t sell products. Pathetic.
