Astronomers have revealed the first photo of a real black hole. Unlike the images and videos we have seen before, this is the real deal.
The photo shows a massive black hole in a galaxy known as Messier 87 or M87. This is 55 million light years away from Earth, which is the equivalent of 500 million trillion kilometers.
The black hole measures 40 billion kilometers across, which is a distance too vast for most of us to even contemplate.
To put its size into perspective, this black hole has a mass 6.5 billion times greater than our own sun. Which makes me suddenly feel very small indeed.
