I’m all for discussing the possible functions of fictional characters in the real world, but I don’t think the real world can ever really justify getting rid of fictional characters.
Think about it.
By some arguments, Superman is too ‘clean slate, goody goody’ to create a real positive response for today’s people. So does that mean there should be no more Superman?
Iron Man creates millions, probably billions, of dollars worth of damage, but it’s all okay because he’s saving people. Would that fly in the real world? Probably not.
But we’re keeping Iron Man. Oh yes, we are.
