He was going to come down eventually. Sure, you could think of scenarios like the wind taking up to a high altitude and the kite hitting the cliff-side, but that's not likely. While this was no doubt frightening for the guy, it really wasn't all that dangerous. Kite snowboarding isn't experimental either, it's done all the time and the gear is available commercially.
