Various governments are desperately trying to change the law so that it has the right to read your communications. And that includes encrypted messages sent using Facebook, WhatsApp, and iMessage.

In this video Tom Scott explains why letting them do this would be a very bad idea indeed. Because despite the obvious upsides there are some really serious downsides.

Governments are using the fight against terror to argue they need a way of reading all of our encrypted messages. It may help, but there’s no guarantee.

And in return for that possibility of stopping more terror attacks we’ll all be giving up our right to communicate without being spied on. Which may be a step too far.
