When I first heard Craig Brewer was creating a web series for MTV last year, I was thrilled to say the least. After all, the writer/director was behind the oscar-winning movie Hustle & Flow.

After months of preparation ‘$5 Cover’ has finally been released this month. So does it live up to expectations? Well, that all depends on your musical taste.

If you’re looking for a sequel to Hustle and Flow I suggest you look elsewhere. $5 Cover is more of a reality show than a dramedy. The actors are all real musicians from Memphis, Tennessee that play themselves and perform their own music in each episode. Even most of their dialoge is improvised.

Artists Showcased

If you’ve ever wondered what it’d be like to be an up-and-coming musician (aka a “starving artist”) you can just follow these local indie acts in each episode:

  • Amy Lavere
  • Lucero
  • Al Kapone
  • Muck Sticky
  • Jack Oblivian
  • River City Tanlines
  • Snowglobe
  • Harlan T. Bobo
  • Two Way Radio
  • Valerie June

Episode 1

Here’s the very first episode which highlights Amy Lavere. New webisodes premiere every Friday at 12 midnight Eastern Time.
