Joni Mitchell’s “River” is one of my favorite Christmas songs. Here she breathes new life into the classic by joining forces with the inimitable Herbie Hancock.

It’s a little more loungy and laidback than the original, which is entirely appropriate since Joni’s getting on these days. But that magic is still there.

So many people have covered this song, but nothing compares to hearing Joni perform it herself. Her voice is so pure and thick with emotion that it gives me goosebumps every time.

This is the perfect soundtrack for Christmas night, as you’re sitting and sipping eggnog and reflecting on the holiday that was. Merry Christmas!
