Perhaps one of the most outspoken beatnik poets was William S. Burroughs. Most of his influential work covered, drugs, homosexuality, death, and of course, politics.

It’s a few days late, but here’s his controversial, ironic and classic poem ‘A Thanksgiving Prayer.’ Read out loud by the man himself.

Growing up as an American citizen, I was taught that Thanksgiving was a cheery time of celebration- one based upon a peaceful feast that our founding fathers had with Native Americans. Who could forget, when majority of my plays I participated in grade school involved wearing a ‘little indian’ costume.

But as I grew older, I came to realize that Thanksgiving is more of an excuse for gluttony and commercialism as Burroughs depicts in this poem. Sure, it’s a bit depressing for the holiday time, but nevertheless important to realize for any American.

Now I’m off to finish up some leftover turkey and stuffing. God bless America!
