This week American Idol mixed things up a little bit, with the contestants stepping out from their regular solo shtick to perform duets.

The pairing of Allison Iraheta and Adam Lambert on a rock number was always going to be solid. Perhaps that expectation made it fall a little flat for me. Instead, I was wowed by the unlikely rock heroes, Kris Allen and Danny Gokey.

Both boys have made a name for themselves as sensitive types, so to see them take on something a little meatier and triumph was truly something special. “Renegade” turned out to be the ideal song for the lads to showcase their masculine energy and flawless harmonies.

Adam Lambert may earn so much of the praise on this show, but these boys are definite dark horses.
