Fun Joseph Antoine Ferdinand Plateau Video | Celebrating Belgian Physicist

22 sec read

You may not be familiar with the name Joseph Antoine Ferdinand Plateau, but without him the world would likely be a lot less entertaining.

Joseph Plateau was a Belgian physicist who invented a device he called the phenakistoscope. Which is why Google has given him his own Google Doodle.

The phenakistoscope uses rotating discs to create the illusion of moving images. These discs spin in opposite directions, and the human brain fills in the gaps.

Plateau’s invention eventually led to the development of cinema, so without him we would never have got to watch Captain America kicking Thanos’ blue ass.
