Herman Melville was an American author who struggled to find appreciation while he was alive but found it after he died. He is best known for the novel Moby Dick, now regarded as a literary masterpiece.

Google seems to pick strange anniversaries these days. This Doodle being a prime example as it celebrates the 161st anniversary of the publication of Moby Dick. As if 161 is a solid number.

The Doodle is fantastic, capturing the essence of the novel in a very simple way. The novel itself is also fantastic, with hidden depths that ensure its billing as a literary masterpiece.
