“If you can’t make work fun, why go to work?”

That was the basic premise behind Ashton Kutcher’s newly launched web series that documents the funny behind-the-scenes moments at his own digital production company. Unfortunately for most viewers, ‘KatalystHQ’ isn’t looking very funny so far…

The Good Concept

On paper, Ashton’s new series looks like a hit. Earlier this month he described the show as having an organic documentary feel. “Videos you see online are just people shooting their normal everyday lives…we feel like something funny happens here almost everyday, so we just want to share that with people,” he said.

The Bad Execution

Unfortunately, the show lacks many qualities that other series contain. The first thing I noticed was the show’s annoying format- you must be a Facebook user to view episodes. After signing in to view the episodes I was even more annoyed by the low quality. Ironically, there isn’t anything HQ about ‘KatalystHQ.’

Cast

Even after viewing a few of the promo clips and episodes I found most of the material to be unfunny. I’m a huge fan of Ashton’s acting and his show Punk’d, however, his minor roles in the series are overshadowed by the crew’s forced humor. The show isn’t so much “organic” as it is poorly improvised.

Ashton, if you’re reading this we fans don’t need another sub-par CollegeHumor style web series.

Promo Clip

Here we have the promo reel of ‘KatalystHQ.’ Not my cup of tea, but If it floats your boat feel free to visit the Facebook link below and view new episodes every Wednesday.
