The country star Kitty Wells has passed away at the age of 92 from complications after suffering a stroke. She’ll be remembered as a pioneer for female singers across all genres.

This video shows Wells performing her biggest hit – It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels – released in 1952 as a response to Wild Side Of Life by Hank Thompson.

Thompson’s hit blamed took a pop at loose woman, blaming a girl he picked up in a bar for ruining his marriage. This song turns the tables, blaming men for acting single when they’re supposed to be loyal husbands.

Wells was one of the first female country singers to hit big, and she undoubtedly opened the door for future artists such as Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn. She will be missed.
