Lorde discussed her long-time friendship with Taylor Swift with The Guardian this week calling the friendship similar to someone that has an autoimmune disease. “It’s like having a friend with very specific allergies” she said.
Lorde explained that Swift’s A-list status comes with celebrities not being able to do certain things together and comes with different sets of consideration.
The New Zealand pop star also states that Swift’s friendship has many perks, too. “It’s an element of wanting to stick together. Because it can be so scary to do this. These friendships, they’re about having a hand put on your shoulder by someone who knows. They’re about hearing. I’ve done it, too” explains Lorde.
Lorde’s comments hit a nerve among fans with may calling the singer insensitive and one Twitter user calling her “incredibly ignorant.” Lorde replied “didn’t mention taylor, but regardless, I f—ked up & that was really insensitive. I’m sorry.”
One fan also questioned how Selena Gomez, a very close friend of Swift’s, may feel about the auto immune comment. Gomez suffers from Lupus, an autoimmune disease.
The duo got to know each other when Swift sent Lorde flowers in 2013 after a performance. The two then went out to eat burgers in New York and have remained close friends ever since.
Prior to the two becoming friends, Lorde criticized Swift stating that the singer was an impossible role model. “Taylor Swift is so flawless, and so unattainable, and I don’t think it’s breeding anything good in young girls” she said in an issue of Metro Magazine in 2013.
Lorde later said that she regretted her remarks and apologized for not thinking too much before she spoke.
Swift recently threw Lorde a birthday celebration in November and has remained close friends with Lorde ever since.
Lorde released a new album recently and has been heavily promoting her album ever since. Swift has not commented on the comments as of yet.
