A film which looks at the lighter side of cancer could either be delightfully original or monumentally insensitive. It seems that with 50/50, filmmaker Jonathan Levine has managed to make a movie that’s the former.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as the unfortunate young man struck down by spinal cancer in the prime of his life. He could bitch and moan about it, and there is inevitably moments where he will, but when you’ve got a friend like Seth Rogen it’s hard to stay down for too long.

Following so many Hollywood reworkings and comic book adaptations, it’s refreshing to see a trailer for movie that feels fresh. 50/50 hits American theaters on September 30.
