Saturday Night Live is 40 years old this year, and to celebrate, there was a special edition of the show aired over the weekend titled SNL 40.

A host of former Saturday Night Live stars returned for the birthday celebrations, but one of the most iconic members of the case sadly couldn’t attend. Namely, Phil Hartman.

Hartman appeared on Saturday Night Live between 1986 and 1994, eventually leaving to write and star in his own movies.

Sadly, he died in 1998, being killed by his wife in a murder-suicide. But his genius as a comic performer can be seen even in this video, his audition tape for SNL.
