I’ve seen people do some very stupid things in my time but none quite as stupid as this. The level of idiocy (or possibly mental illness) on display here is astounding as a woman jumps into the water of the polar bear enclosure at Berlin Zoo.

I don’t know what she thought would happen. They do look cuddly but to them you are meat, not a friend to cuddle and play with. Maybe she’d watched The Golden Compass recently and wanted to give the bears their armor back.

The 32-year-old woman jumped into the enclosure during feeding time, so what were the bears to think? “Ah, here’s supper!” would obviously be their first reaction. Possibly followed by, “She’s a bit grisly though.”

She was bitten several time despite zookeepers attempts to distract the bears. She was then eventually pulled clear (on the second try) and is now recovering in hospital. I’m guessing she’ll be spending some time in a different kind of hospital soon.
