Months before it even hits local cinema screens, Australian film The Sapphires is being touted as the next big thing. It gained rave reviews at Cannes and scores an American distribution deal with Harvey Weinstein.

The Sapphires tells the real life story of a soulful Aboriginal girl group who entertained the troops during the Vietnam War. The girls will be unknown to international audiences, but Jessica Mauboy’s a high-profile Aussie singer and Deborah Mailman’s won several acting accolades.

Chris O’Dowd joins the Aussie cast as the group’s lovable but uncultured manager.
