Now that The Watchmen has finally hit theaters, people are having a hard time judging the movie. While MTV and The Guardian are praising the film, Times and Salt Lake Tribune are leaning toward the negative side.
Whenever a movie comes out with such mixed reviews, I always turn to my favorite movie critic- the entire Spill.com crew.
My personal rule is that if you have to read into the movie to appreciate it, then it isn’t a good movie. Judging by the opinions stated in this video I’d say that The Watchmen, like certain movies based on books, has this catch 22.
At the end, Spill gives it a “Matinee” rating; their equivalent to a 3 out of 5. It should also be noted that this is one of the first R-rated superhero movies to emerge in a while. Sure, The Dark Knight was grimacing, but it didn’t have excessive blood, sex scenes, or blue penises.
