The video footage NASA released of Curiosity descending to Mars was pretty underwhelming, being grainy and black-and-white. Thankfully an enterprising individual with too much time on their hands has done the job right.

Humanity now has a presence on Mars, with the robot rover called Curiosity sat on the surface of the red planet photographing the landscape and taking samples.

Its journey down to the surface was epic, and now we can see just how epic in ultra high-definition. This video is stitched together from thousands of still frames, and it took weeks to forge into a moving image.

Of course the visual effects and added sound make it just a little artificial, but it gives a damn good sense of the descent Curiosity had to endure.
