‘Viva La Vida’ Vs ‘If I Could Fly’ Mashup Video | Is Joe Satriani Right To Sue Coldplay?

Joe Satriani is currently suing Coldplay accusing them of plagiarizing his song If I Could Fly when writing Viva La Vida. Now is your chance to hear the two songs together and make your own mind up.

This YouTube video is a mash up of the two songs together, and while it’s messy at times, there are occasions when the songs converge and sound as though they fit together like a glove.

Personally I’m with Coldplay on this. There are undoubtedly some aspects of these two tracks which overlap but that doesn’t automatically mean Chris Martin has plagiarized Joe Satriani’s work.

Surely any mash up of this nature shows how similar some songs can be, sounding like different pieces of the same jigsaw. Music is music, and Viva La Vida is sufficiently different from If I Could Fly to make me think Satriani is just after some publicity.
