“POLICE have charged a Cairns mother with murdering eight children but say investigators face a “long, hard road” ahead.
“Raina Mersane Ina Thaiday, also known as Mersane Warria, 37, was today formally charged with eight counts of murder, seven relating to her own children and the eight to her niece, in a bedside hearing at the Cairns Base Hospital.
“The eight children were found dead in a home at Manoora, Cairns, on Friday morning. They are aged between two and 14. Ms Thaiday was found suffering from self-inflicted knife wounds.
“The Department of Justice said Ms Thaiday appeared before Magistrate Alan Comans at the hearing. She has been excused from attending a further hearing at the Cairns Magistrates Court tomorrow.”
