“This tradition started as a Christian holiday and without a groundhog.
“On Feb. 2, Christians would take their candles to the church to have them blessed which they felt would bring blessings to their house for the remaining winter.
“This tradition was brought to Germany and the Germans brought the furry rodent into the mix. Once the German settlers came to the U.S., they brought this tradition with them.”
