It seemed to go to number one everywhere, but I’ve got to admit that I despise Rihanna‘s Umbrella. So when I heard Australian Idol hopeful Natalie Gauci was planning to sing it this week, I cringed.
Here’s a girl with pop star looks but real talent, so why was she singing one of the biggest blights on the modern music scene? But I should have known Natalie’s musical instincts would be spot on.
Natalie managed what seemed impossible, turning this disposable pop piece into a beautiful ballad. It earned the support of the crowd, and a “touchdown” from outspoken judge Mark Holden.
And the best part? She dropped that terrible “ella-ella-ella” refrain. Thank you Natalie, thank you.
