Carly Smithson has been the quiet achiever in this year’s American Idol competition. She’s delivered consistently wonderful performances, but I haven’t posted any of her videos yet because there was always someone just a little bit better.

But not this week.

In her stunning performance of Blackbird, Carly flew high above the other contestants. Her vocals were understated and effortless, and her connection to this beautifully simple song was evident.

Of course, “nasty judge” Simon Cowell didn’t see it that way. This man just shows his ignorance when he insults classic songs like this. Make sure you watch to the end to see the feisty Irish lass put him in his place.
