I’ve cannot claim to be a man’s man. Maybe it’s because I was brought up in a matriarchy under Margaret Thatcher in 1980s Britain. But whatever the reason, it means activities such as this are likely never to be on my to-do list.

Which is a shame because catching a fish with your bare hands while ice fishing through a hole is just about the coolest thing I can think of. And when someone videos it and sticks on the Web your fame is forever.

The story goes that the fish just weren’t biting for these guys while they used traditional fishing equipment. So rather than go home empty-handed one of them decided to try and catch one with his bare hands.

And he manages it, rather inconceivably.

I want to shake this guy by the hand for catching a fish in this way. But only after he’s washed it thoroughly. See, I told you, I’m a grade-A wuss.

Usually, when one stumbles across a video of a kitten on the web, it’s to show them having a good time. This video, on the other hand, is a hard watch for anyone; especially cat lovers.

The sick fishermen involved justify their actions by saying that they were doing it, “Because of global warming.” What a pathetic excuse.

As a former cat owner myself, I couldn’t even imagine someone ever piercing a hook in the back of a defenseless kitten. Yet, that is exactly what these wealthy fishermen are doing for pure entertainment purposes. Rather than high-fives, these scumbags need to be given proper punishment.

If you’re wondering about the kites in the background, they are being used to suspend live bait just on the surface of the water. This method of “kite fishing” is over 500 years old and is said to be one of the most effective ways to fish. That being said, even fishermen 500 years ago never used cats as the bait.

Thank God for citizen journalism- who knows how long these men were doing this cruel activity before they were exposed.

The man in this video is Dave Herbert- a 60 year old science teacher from Iowa who likes to fish as a hobby. As most teachers do, Dave here has had a lot of time on his hands to come up with crazy ideas.

Such as fishing with a remote controlled helicopter.

While I do admit that this idea is quite useless, I was surprised that it actually worked. It’s a little known fact that the RC helicopter in the video only runs for 6 minutes on batteries before having to be completely recharged for an hour. Talk about getting lucky.

But that isn’t the only thing that made me skeptical about the legitimacy of this video. Just before the fish is supposedly caught (1:58), there is a cut. The “dead” giveaway (no pun intended) was the lifelessness of the fish itself. It didn’t even squirm.

As much as I want to believe in this entertaining video, I just can’t. Let’s hope Mr. Herbert’s class doesn’t find out about this. That is, if he even has a class.

Now here is a survival tip we can give to Survivorman and Bear Giles; to catch food while you are lost in the wild, all you need is a flashlight and a pan to make lots of noise.

These crazy night fishermen almost get to the point of being attacked, or caught, by these fish as they get bombarded with flying fish. And all they did was shine a flashlight in the water and bang their hands on the side of the boat.
