I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw this- I even double checked to make sure I hadn’t mistakenly flipped to Fox News. If I didn’t know Chris Matthews was an Obama supporter, then I would have thought this comment was racist.

“I forgot he was black,” he says concerning the State of the Union Address Obama gave recently. I know he means well, but it just seems like there’s some underlying racism here.

Comments like this really make me question whether or not racism in America is really changing. Why is it that a white politician is just “a politician” and a black one must be “a black politician?” The sooner we stop with these labels the better.

If anything, this comment from Matthews tells me that he really sees himself as different from Obama. As for the whole “we’ve completely forgotten it tonight” comment, I can’t see why we can’t forget it every night.

We’ve had a whole year to let the whole “OMG our president is black” fact sink in. That shouldn’t really be news in 2010.
