The three members of Pussy Riot have been sentenced to two years in prison for performing a song critical of Vladimir Putin in a Moscow cathedral.
A snippet of the performance can be seen in this CNN News video of the sentencing. It only 30 seconds, but for that Pussy Riot are being thrown in jail for 24 months.
There are some complex issues at play here, ones that will feel alien outside of Russia to a certain extent. So it’s easy for westerners to judge by a different set of standards, but it’s not necessarily right to do so.
However, the length of the jail term is being described as harsh by legal experts, and there is speculation that this has more to do with the Putin angle than the religious angle.
