This past weekend saw the Moon, our moon, appear to get bigger and brighter in the night sky. Don’t worry, it’s not falling into Earth, it’s just a phenomenon called a Supermoon.

This video shows footage of the Supermoon, but you can only get the full effect by seeing it with the naked eye.

A supermoon occurs when the Moon is at its fullest and closest to the Earth on its elliptical orbit. It’s not actually any bigger or brighter, but it still looks startlingly impressive.

It’s so easy to ignore how huge the universe is and how small and insignificant a part of that universe each of us each. Some people find this realization freeing, while other freak out, but it’s true regardless.
