Melting Steel With Focussed Beam Of Sunlight | The Power Of Solar Energy

27 sec read

Last week’s edition of James May’s Big Ideas was all about energy and what we’re all going to do when the fossil fuels run out.

As part of his investigation, May visited these scientists who are attempting to make petrol out of thin air by using solar energy.

Impossible? Well no actually, and to demonstrate the powers of solar energy, May first cooks a hot dog sausage, and then by focussing the beam of sunlight, manages to burn through solid steel.

The programme also investigated wind power, including using kites to create energy, and wave power, utilising the tides to capture natural energy.

But, in terms of visual demonstrations, this takes some beating. It makes you wonder why we still use coal and oil really doesn’t it.
