Watch Alan Alda in New Documentary ‘The Human Spark’ Video | What Makes Us People?

In this segment of the first of a three-part documentary, Alan Alda visits the rock shelter of Abri Castanet in Southwest France.

What he finds out about some of our ancestors’ early behaviors isn’t at all what he expected.

Using teeth and shells for necklaces may seem like a strange place to start for figuring out what makes us human, but it’s still a start.

Frankly, I am feeling put at ease by the fact that our ancestors likely used deceased bodies for some use. Hopefully they didn’t eat them, but bone jewelry is okay.

Imagine the weapons they could make from hip bones.

I love history.
