After the success of “High School Reunion” TVLand is at it again with it’s new ‘reality’ show about adults turning The Big 4-0. This half-hour show documents real 39 year-old adults 40 days in preparation before their big celebration.

So does the show accurately reflect the excitement of turning 40, or does it simply show-off like MTV’s Sweet Sixteen?

After watching the first episode myself, I’d sadly have to go with the latter. Don’t expect to gain any lifelong lesson over this six part series; this is purely entertainment targeted at TVLand’s average 37 year-old audience. For God’s sake the producers’ previous work include the shows “Beauty and the Geek” and “The Biggest Loser.”

Not that there’s anything wrong with a little mindless entertainment now and then. Fans of shows like “The Biggest Loser” can at least look forward to each episode’s happy ending. Still, the producers insist that the show captures a relatable milestone:

“Now at 40, you can meet that person you dream about, you can start a family, you can go back to college.” I guess none of these were possible before?

Episode 1 Promo

This is a short promo of the first episode of ‘The Big 4-0.’ Here former (out of shape) NFL running back Derrick Moore tells us that he wants to celebrate turning 40 by playing a football game with his students.
