This is the official trailer for what is regarded as one of the best movies of all time – 2001: A Space Odyssey. Personally, although I appreciate the visuals, and the otherworldly feel to it all, I’ve never actually understood the film.
I don’t think I’m alone in that feeling of not knowing what the hell is going on either. There are apes killing each other, there are black monoliths which seem to be timeless and immortal, there’s a fetus floating through space, and there’s an insane computer called HAL.
And I’m meant to take all that in, process the information, and understand what Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke are meant to be telling us? Not a chance. I know some people have tried to explain the plot but I’m still none the wiser.
In the end, does that actually matter? 2001: A Space Odyssey is still a film that I’d recommend seeing because it’s an experience like no other. Looking more like a work of art than a movie, it looks great on a large television.
