This is the music video for Yonkers by Tyler The Creator, a young 20-year-old rapper from L.A. who also acts as the leader of OFWGKTA (Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All). Yonkers is a single from his new solo album Goblin.
Having lost track of the hip hop scene some years back, Yonkers has knocked me aback. It’s very different, very fresh, very back-to-basics, which is a positive anathema to the glitzy, over-produced sound that was big a few years back.
Tyler The Creator clearly has something to say and does so through music. Which is how the whole genre came about in the first place. So rather than over-the-top sampling lyrical tricks this is just rap delivered over a beat.
Tyler The Creator won’t be to everyone’s taste, but I’m already impressed having heard just one track by him. If the rest of Goblin is as good as this then it could be an influential album.
